New England Patriots will Resign Julian Edelman; Submit an Offer Sheet for Emmanuel Sanders

The New England Patriots have decided to bring back restricted free agent Julian Edelman.  The franchise has also decided to submit an offer sheet for former Pittsburg Steelers player, Emmanuel Sanders.  After losing Wes Welker to the Denver Broncos and releasing Brandon Lloyd they need to place some more pieces around Danny Amendola.

Ian Rapoport from NFL.com reported that Julian Edelman will sign a one year deal later today.  Julian Edelman was injured last season and was not very productive when he was on the field.  If Edelman can have a productive season this coming year then he may find himself a contract extension.

This will be the fifth season that Julian Edelman will be a New England Patriot.  In previous years Edelman has not had that much production at wide receiver.  Edelman has a total of 714 receiving yards and 4 touchdowns with 69 receptions in the four years that he has been with the team.

NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport also was the one to report that the New England Patriots have submitted an offer sheet for wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders.  This will result in a one year deal with Emmanuel Sanders from the New England Patriots.  If the Pittsburg Steelers are unable to match New England’s offer than the Patriots will have to send the Steelers a third round pick.  The Pittsburg Steelers do not have enough money to compete with the Patriots for Emmanuel Sanders.   Their best option is to restructure another players contract in order to have enough money to resign Sanders.

Sanders has played wide receiver for the Pittsburg Steelers for the past three seasons.  In those three seasons, Emmanuel Sanders has 1,290 yards and 5 touchdowns with 94 receptions.

Both players also have the ability to return kick and punt returns if they are needed.  Edelman or Sanders may be able to play as the second return man behind Leon Washington since the Patriots will be looking to keep Danny Amendola healthy.  This is just one more step the Patriots have made to improve their team this off season.
