It is conformed that the San Francisco 49ers are willing to trade quarterback Alex Smith to the Kansas City Chiefs for a second-round pick in this year’s draft (#34) and a conditional pick in 2014. The 49ers will have 11 picks in this year’s draft.
Once this trade is final, Kansas City is expected to release QB Matt Cassel, who has two years remaining on a 6-year/$63M contract when he was acquired in a trade from the New England Patriots in 2009. Cassel didn’t live up to the hype he had in New England and was benched during the season last year.
Smith lost his starting job to Colin Kaepernick while recuperating from a concussion he suffered against the St. Louis Rams on November 11th. He will play under the terms of his remaining contract ($8.5M in 2013).
It seems to be a trend for the 49ers to give their QBs to the chiefs; from Joe Montana (1993) to Steve Bono (1994) to Elvis Gerbac (1997).
