With rumors circulating that Alex Smith will be not be a San Francisco 49er next year, teams are already very interested in picking up the veteran quarterback. Ian Rapoport of NFL.com reports that the teams that are currently interested include the Kansas City Chiefs, Philadelphia Eagles, Buffalo Bills and Arizona Cardinals.
These teams are reported to view Smith as a bridge quarterback, not a franchise quarterback. Teams know that if they draft a rookie, Smith will handle the situation well after the way he handled the Colin Kaepernick situation. Smith’s experience running the spread in college could be attractive to a team like the Eagles, who want to bring Chip Kelly’s style of offense.
Surprisingly, the New York Jets haven’t shown any interest yet. This will probably enrage Jets fans, who want a new starting quarterback. I don’t think there’s anyone besides the Jets’ front office that believes that Mark Sanchez will ever be a decent quarterback.
Even without the Jets knocking, Alex Smith will probably find a new home in 2013.
