Chargers’ running back Ryan Mathews broke his collarbone on his first carry in the first quarter of the first preseason game against the Green Bay Packers on Thursday night. Mathews had surgery Friday and is expected to miss 4-6 weeks.
Mathews had a great 2011-2012 season as a running back averaging 4.9 yards per carry and stacking 1,091 yards which punched his ticket to the Pro Bowl. Head coach Norv Turner stated that Ryan was in great shape and was looking forward to a more productive season from his running back.
San Diego has a good RB corps that consists of Curtis Brinkley (Chargers’ 3rd year RB), Ronnie Brown (free agent from the Eagles) and Jackie Battle (free agent from the Chiefs); now the question is which running back will take advantage of this opportunity? We have to wait and see.
