Kansas City Chiefs: Addressing the 2012 Off-Season

The 2011 Chiefs had a roller coaster of a season to say the least. They finished at 7-9 in a very close AFC West, and find themselves drafting at the 11th pick in the draft. A big reason why the Chiefs struggled in 2011 was due to injuries. Many of their key players were out for most of the season: Jamal Charles, Eric Berry, Matt Castle, and Tony Moeaki. They also went into this offseason with many big name free agents.

In the 2012 off-season, the Chiefs need to address:

1) Who to re-sign? – The Chiefs handed their premier wide receiver, Dwayne Bowe, the franchise tag. Other free agents that the Chiefs had going into this off-season were Brandon Carr, Kyle Orton, Lenard Pope, and Jackie Battle. Lenard Pope and Jackie Battle are still free agents and both Carr and Orton made their departures to sign with the Dallas Cowboys. Matt Castle will resume the starting job in Kansas City when the 2012 season starts but the biggest blow the Chiefs suffered was Brandon Carr signing with Dallas. Peyton Manning is now the best quarterback in the AFC West and with that being said, the Chargers, Raiders, and Chiefs have to account for that. Their secondaries must be on their toes this season since they play Manning twice a year. The Chiefs losing Brandon Carr is huge and even though they signed ex-Raider Standford Route to fill in for Carr’s departure, the Chiefs should address cornerback at the 3rd to 4rth round range in the draft.

Other free agents that the Chiefs have brought in: Peyton Hills (RB), Eric Winston (OT), Brady Quinn (QB), Kevin Boss (TE)

2) Position Needs – The two huge needs going into this off-season were at tackle and defensive tackle. Although the Chiefs signed Eric Winston to a 4 year deal, they can still address depth at that position. This leaves the defensive tackle position. There are a handful for first round prospects that the Chiefs will be able to choose from.

3) Defensive Tackles – The top three names on the BTK Mock Draft are Dontari Poe, Michael Brockers and Fletcher Cox. As of right now, the BTK Mock Draft 4.0 has the Kansas City Chiefs selecting Michael Brockers out of LSU. He can help fill the hole at defensive tackle.
